Vintage 2023 · Stellenbosch

Deep ruby with a violet rim. The first lift is mulberry and black cherry, threaded with white pepper and a coil of smoke — bacon fat, cedar, a dry herb note like fynbos in autumn.
Full-bodied and supple. The fruit holds at the front; in the mid-palate the oak shows itself as cedar and dark chocolate, and the tannin is fine-grained, almost chalky. Acidity is bright enough to carry the weight.
Long and savoury. The pepper that opened the wine returns at the close, and the tannin lingers without drying. Decant 30 minutes before pouring.
Char-edged steak, lamb shoulder slow-cooked with rosemary, springbok carpaccio, or a mature aged cheddar. Decant 30 minutes before serving.
Our wines begin in the vineyards of Lourensford Estate, on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. Here, mountain soils, elevation, slope orientation and the cooling influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean create ideal conditions for grapes with freshness, character and depth.
Our Shiraz is grown in Pinedene soils on western-facing slopes of the Helderberg, at 200 metres above sea level. The vines, planted in 2000, receive generous afternoon sunlight, helping the grapes develop depth, colour and flavour intensity.
During ripening, less-developed grape bunches are removed by hand. This allows the vine to direct its energy towards the strongest remaining fruit, bringing greater concentration, consistency and richness to the final wine.
The 2023 season in Stellenbosch was warm and dry. The Cape Doctor — the south-easterly wind off the Atlantic — held its course through January and February, keeping the canopies clean and the berries small.
We picked the Shiraz block over four mornings in late February, starting at first light when the fruit was still cool. The yield was modest; the concentration, generous. Twelve months in French oak followed, a quarter of the barrels new — enough to add structure, not enough to dominate the fruit.
